Did you know that Thomas Chalmers
(who is quoted in the Heterodoxy Hall of Shame
in this issue) was an early proponent of what is now known as the "Gap
Theory"? He was very interested in "reconciling" the Bible with
scientific discovery and held to the view that there was a series of pre-Adamic catastrophes (e.g., between Genesis 1:1 and 2 and
between Genesis 1:25 and 26) that account for the formation of most of the
strata and fossil deposits. This soon led to the abandoning of the belief in
the historical Flood altogether.
