Mike gave us this link as what he believes, and I'd like to comment on the quote.
<<The Gospel of God's grace in Christ Jesus is not a thing to be proved, but truth to be believed.>>
It is true that the gospel cannot be proven to lost sinners. Belief in the gospel only comes as a result of a miracle of God's grace.
<<It is not submitted to our reasoning powers as a subject for critical examination.>>
Not submitted to our reasoning powers? So is the gospel UNreasonable? Is it illogical? Is it not something that we grasp with our minds?
<<The gospel is a MESSAGE FROM GOD, addressed to the conscience, feelings, and affections.>>
Ah, here's the answer. It's not addressed to the mind. It's just mysticism. How do you know you believe the gospel? "I feel it," says the mysticist.
<<For this reason, men fond of argument and proving everything by strictly logical deduction generally make very poor preachers. In the Scriptures, God does not argue, He proclaims!>>
Strictly logical deduction? God does not reason? Is the truth illogical? Is it unreasonable? Does the Bible contain illogic? Does it contain paradox? Do we have to "swallow" contradictions in the Bible "by faith," as Spurgeon said?
How about we go to the SCRIPTURES rather than man's opinions:
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Act 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
Act 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
Act 18:19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.
Act 24:25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
As for me, I'll go with Scripture.
